Evidence for an Extended SZ Effect in WMAP Data
Myers et al 2004 RAS Press Release Images
The upper panel shows part of the WMAP temperature map with diamonds representing the position of nearby galaxy clusters. The galaxy clusters and superclusters tend to lie in cooler (blue) temperature regions. The lower panel shows the same area without the cluster positions for reference.
Schematic showing how SZ effect may corrupt the WMAP data. The microwave photons are scattered as they pass through foreground galaxy clusters.
An example of a nearby rich cluster - the Coma cluster.
