Integral field spectroscopy using image-slicing technology

Tiny telescope picture Overview

We are provinding integral field units for the GEMINI Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS). Because these systems have to operate inside the spectrograph's cryostat and fit in a small space, we will use an image-slicing technique based on our Advanced Image Slicer concept (R. Content, 1997, SPIE 2871, 1295). See GNIRS IFU paper (WORD97) (Dubbeldam et al. SPIE'00 Munich). We have also studied a slicer design for integral field spectroscopy with NGST - see Image Slicer for Integral Field Spectroscopy with NGST (gzipped postscript 0.1Mb (R. Content, to appear in SPIE 3356)

Image-slicing IFU parameters

Instrument Field area (arcsec^2) sampling (arcsec)
GNIRS-IFU 1.0 x 1.4 0.04 x 0.04
GNIRS-IFU 3.2 x 4.3 0.15 x 0.15
