Information for Postgraduate Students

Submitting

This page gives details of the ``Rules for submission of work for Higher Degrees'' from Durham University. These should be mailed to all submitting candidates by Old Shire Hall.

Prizes

You might consider bringing the following prizes to your supervisors attention if you feel you are eligible for any of them:

• Departmental Postgraduate Prizes (see here for details).
• The RAS Michael Penston Astronomy Prize (Doctoral Thesis in Astronomy) is awarded for the best doctoral thesis in Astronomy or Astrophysics submitted and examined in a given year (currently 1st October 1998 and 30th September 1999). The prize of £1000 is sponsored jointly by PPARC and the RAS and is administered by the RAS Education Committee. The awards are open to students of all nationalities registered at Universities in the United Kingdom and is not restricted to Fellows and Junior Members of the RAS. The winners will be expected to give a short presentation on their thesis to an Ordinary Meeting of the Society and will also be required to collaborate with the organisers in publicising the work to the general public. More details of the application proceedure can be found here. The deadline for applications is 31st January 2000.

Thesis Publicity

Observatory magazine is interested in publishing summaries of UK theses in Astronomy. We actively encourage you to submit these and more details can be found on this page.

We would also like to encourage people to submit a similar summary (either an expanded version of the abstract, or probably better a cut-down version of your conclusions, see here for an example) to the astro-ph preprint server to increase the visibility of their work. A good approach would be to send the summary into the server and include a URL link to the full thesis on a web page in Durham for interested parties to retrieve.
